Environmental Conservation, Department of

Open Competitive: four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional or technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education AND one year of experience teaching about or interpreting the natural world.
Substitution: Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental education, environmental interpretation, environmental science, natural history, natural sciences, or a closely related field may substitute for four years of the general experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a residential camp setting including outdoor pursuits experience such as hiking, canoeing, backpacking, hunting, fishing, water safety, and archery

Certified in American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies or equivalent and in American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automated External Defibrillator certification for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent
 
Duties Description
Provide on-site oversight and guidance at a specific DEC Environmental Education Residential Camp during the summer while ensuring that all camp procedures and protocols are followed.
Recruit camp staff at career fairs, colleges and schools during the fall and winter.
Work with regional Operations staff to ensure camps are safe and functioning before staff and campers arrive.
Review camp educational materials and mentoring counselors on interpretation techniques and working with children.
Partner with organizations whose audiences are traditionally underserved and marginalized through activities providing outdoor education and recreation for potential campership recipients.
Work with non-profit organizations, local municipalities, and state agencies identifying community environmental education needs and developing outreach plans to address these areas.
Coordinate with local communities highlighting the camp program as a local resource and incorporating local professionals as camp guest speakers
Organize and lead programs that focus on stewardship of natural resources thereby reconnecting people to the natural world.
Represent DEC at appropriate venues and events hosted by community organizations and local municipalities.
 
Additional Comments
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
