A strong résumé makes it easy for a hiring team to compare your experience with the stated requirements. For NYC government applications, accuracy and relevance matter more than decorative design.
Match the announcement
Read the minimum qualifications and responsibilities before editing your résumé. Identify the experience, education, certifications, software, and technical skills that are genuinely relevant to the role.
Describe experience clearly
For each position, include the employer, title, location, and month/year dates. Use bullet points that explain what you did, the scope of your work, and the outcome. Where possible, quantify results without exaggerating.
Use evidence-based language
Replace vague statements such as “helped with reports” with accurate descriptions such as “prepared weekly inventory reports for a 12-person operations team.” Only include details you can explain if asked.
Make qualifications easy to find
Place relevant licenses, certifications, education, and technical skills where they are easy to scan. If the announcement requires a specific credential, state it accurately and include the relevant date or status where appropriate.
Check consistency
- Use consistent date formats and job titles.
- Explain gaps or overlapping roles honestly when relevant.
- Proofread names, contact information, and spelling.
- Follow requested file formats and attachment instructions.
- Do not include confidential information from a current employer.
Keep a master résumé
Maintain a complete version of your work history, then tailor a copy for each role. Never add skills or credentials you do not have merely because they appear in the posting.
Always follow the official vacancy’s application instructions. Some positions may request additional forms or documents beyond a résumé.
