How to Tailor Your Résumé for NYC Public-Sector Roles

Posted on October 20, 2026 by Amelia

A résumé for an NYC public-sector role should make it easy to see how your experience matches the vacancy announcement. There is no single résumé format required for every role, so tailor your document to the position and follow any application instructions.

Practical improvements

  • Use a clear summary focused on relevant experience.
  • Describe responsibilities and accomplishments with specific examples.
  • Include dates, employers, and job titles consistently.
  • Use terminology from the announcement when it accurately describes your skills.
  • Include required licenses, training, or technical skills.

Be truthful and specific. Do not add qualifications you do not have, and check whether the agency asks for additional information beyond a résumé.
